What is Acid Rain Questions
1. Acid Rain is defined as any precipitation that has a pH lower than normal rainfall, which is 5.6.
2. Acid rain must have a pH lower than 5.6 to be acid rain, and the normal pH of water is 7, which is completely neutral. Some acid rain even goes into the 4 point range, which can have major environmental effects.
3. The major cause of acid rain is the burning of fossil fuels, which can release sulfur, carbon and nitrogen into the air.
4. Acid rain is particularly interesting because it is not just limited to local areas. Acid rain can travel long distances, and air pollution in the Midwest can cause acid rain in the Northeast.
5. The main chemicals in acid rain are sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, which react with water vapor to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
6. The chemical reactions that create acid rain can take anywhere from several hours to several days.
7. When pollution from smokestacks fist became a problem, the government made smokestacks taller so that the pollutants would not settle on the ground and harm animal life.
8. This was not successful because the pollutants were being pumped into the air, where they could cause problems in the atmosphere or fall to Earth as acid rain.
9. The Northeast is most affected by acid rain, and the usual pH there is 4-4.5.
10. West of the Mississippi is the least affected, where most rainfall is neutral or basic.

I have decided to keep a journal to write down my feelings and observations. The temperature today was -1 degrees Celsius. That may sound cold, but years ago the average temperature here was -11 degrees. We have long since seen the effects of global warming, ever since it was first discovered to be heating our Earth in the late 20th century. My father told me that global warming was taught about in school when he was young, so I do not know why there still has been little, if any, positive change. The Montreal Protocol and Kyoto Protocol have remained in effect for over half a century, and they have cut down on carbon emissions significantly, but maybe the scientists were right. Maybe we have damaged our atmosphere beyond repair. I don't believe that though, I think that if we continue our efforts and push them even more, then over time our atmosphere will return to it's former state. Maybe then the temperature fluctuations will cease, and all of the effects that our generation have seen will recover. My home of Canada has already seen one third of our native species migrate further north or find higher land, in search of colder temperatures. The effect on food chains has been devastating, and biologists like myself have been called into action to try and find a solution to uneven populations. A majority of our wildlife reserves have also become useless, because the animals they protected have moved away. Hopefully the arctic ice will return as well. I have read papers and seen pictures of the ice in it's full glory, where it covered almost the whole arctic circle. Now it is confined to the very top of the North Pole. Living space has decreased as well, when the oceans rose. Land for agriculture was lost, and the world faced a hunger crisis that almost erupted in a fourth World War. Floods have wrecked the land and the severe weather has caused havoc in some countries. I hope that our generation and generations to come will fix this issue, or we will have to look to expand to other plants possibly.
